Dine Like a Local at Soho South Cafe
SOHO SOUTH CAFE IN SAVANNAH, GA RESTAURANT REVIEW
Named after the iconic New York City neighborhood, Soho South Cafe is a true Savannahian lunch staple.
From Repair Shop to Restaurant
In a previous life, this space was a repair shop, and several original elements remain, including iron trusses, large steel windows, and the solid wood garage doors at the back of the building. Now lined with lights, those doors makes a surprisingly beautiful backdrop for wedding ceremonies and photos.
It’s a great space, filled with little details that make each visit one of discovery. Larger, stand-out details — like a wall of antique doors and windows — lend themselves to create a truly versatile space.
Soho South Cafe's Eclectic Decor
While the exterior facade of Soho may be nothing to write home about, the space inside is just as worthy of mention as their menu. From the shrubs and trees scattered around the mismatched tables and chairs, to the chandeliers and giant clock, Soho’s bohemian feel is a balance of quirky and eclectic.
New Owners, Same Delicious Menu
Originally opened in 1997, Soho changed hands a few years ago, causing a bit of a panic around town. Why? Because the menu staples are just that good, and no one wanted them to be changed, or worse, taken off the menu completely. Luck for us, Soho was bought by The Daniel Reed group, owners of Local11ten and Public Kitchen and Bar.
In an interview with Eat It and Like It’s Jesse Blanco, Executive Chef Brandy Williamson assured the worried public that they “took 70 percent of what SOHO was doing, tweaked it and put it right back out.” This includes the original Tomato Soup recipe, always perfect on a wintery afternoon.
What to Eat at the Soho South Cafe
Just reading through their menu makes me hungry. The last time I went for lunch, I couldn’t decide what to try, so I narrowed my choices down to three:
- Seared Salmon BLT - spinach, tomato, bacon, and a tangy garlic aioli on a toasted honey wheat roll
- Howlin’ Chicken - fried chicken breast with fried pickles, cheddar cheese, and housemade jalapeno ranch
- Fried Green Tomato - cornmeal encrusted green tomato, toasted goat cheese, spinach, sweet tomato & oregano jam, on toasted wheat bread
This was possibly one of the hardest food-related decisions I’ve made, but I went with the Howlin’ Chicken, and it was worth every, single, sinful bite.
Soho South Cafe Hours
Soho opens for lunch at 11 a.m. every day, except for the weekends when they have brunch starting at 10 a.m. Their brunch, which I have yet to try, is so popular that they take — and recommend — reservations. Whether you’re just stopping in for lunch, or looking for an event space, Soho South Cafe won’t disappoint.
