Our pets are family, so when we go on vacation we want to bring them along — not board them with strangers. At Lucky Savannah, we love to accommodate guests traveling with their furry loved ones in one of our many pet-friendly properties. Savannah is a dog friendly city, with many restaurants, shops, and even tours that will allow you to bring your furry friend along.
Taking Your Dog Around Town
Strolling through Savannah’s iconic squares in the Historic District is a pleasure for visitors and their pets. The City of Savannah’s Leash Law requires that all pets be leashed when visiting City parks, squares, and businesses, and requires pet owners to “scoop” up after their pets. In-ground receptacles are available for disposing of baggies, and can be found in most parks and squares - they usually look like a little green metal dome on the ground with a sign above them. You’ll also find water bowls for dogs in a few Savannah parks, like Ellis and Troup Squares.
Many local businesses allow dogs to paw around inside. Coffee shops like The Coffee Fox on Broughton St. and Custard Boutique, a clothing store on Whitaker Street, don’t mind furry patrons. Over in City Market, pet’s are welcome to grab a slice of pizza at Vinnie Van Go-Go’s and enjoy the live music outside of Wild Wing Cafe.
With four shops throughout the Historic District, including one in City Market, Woof Gang Bakery has everything you could need — or your pooch could want — during your visit! They carry a large assortment of treats, toys, special diet foods, and even extra poop bags.
Pet-Friendly Savannah Tours
The GA State Railroad Museum is outdoors, and always accommodates visitors with their pets. Several tours will allow you to bring your pets along on the adventure. Oliver Bentleys Historic Dog Walk Tour is tailored for people traveling with their dogs, and their oven-baked treats are made right here in Savannah. Old Savannah Tours Trolley Tours allow dogs up to 25 lbs, and you can bring a dog under 20 lbs on a horse and carriage ride with Plantation Carriage Company. Many walking tours are dog friendly, including Explore Savannah, Architectural Tours of Savannah, and Haunted Savannah Tours.
Savannah Dog Parks
Mother Matilda Beasley Dog Park is the only bone-a-fide dog party in the Historic District with an off leash dog run and a dog station for bathing. We offer several pet-friendly homes just a short walk away, perfect for extended stays.
Just a few miles from downtown is Daffin Park, the largest dog park in Savannah. They even have different areas for dogs for different size dogs. If you want to go on a hike with your four-legged friend, head out to Skidaway Island State Park, where they allow dogs on their trails, or Fort Pulaski National Monument, which has a dog-friendly beach.
Pet-Friendly Savannah Restaurants
Many Savannah restaurants have outdoor seating, where they’re always happy to accommodate furry companions. For coffee, we recommend Gallery Espresso on Chippewa Square, or the Sentient Bean on the south end of Forsyth Park. J. Christopher’s has a fantastic breakfast and a separate “Doggie Bag” menu for the pup’s palate.
Blowin’ Smoke and Moon River Brewery both have large outdoor pet friendly patios where you can enjoy dinner, drinks, and live music. Many restaurants like Kayak Kafé, The Six Pence Pub, and Mellow Mushroom have outdoor seating, and will bring a bowl of water for your four-legged friends. For finer dining, The Olde Pink House and Vic’s on the River allow pets in their outdoor seating areas.
Pet-Friendly Savannah Events
The Humane Society for Greater Savannah hosts an Annual Doggie Carnival every May in Forsyth Park. Admission to this fun family event is free, and all proceeds go to benefit the Humane Society. Four-legged friends can participate in a doggie derby, doggie and me photo booths, paw print art, and more! Past events have included food trucks and beer for those over 21.
Held the first weekend in October, River Street’s Oktoberfest features a Wiener Dog Racing, Bratwurst Tasting, and a variety of beers and food booths with German cuisine. River Street can get crowded during events, so it’s best to go earlier in the day if you plan on bringing your furbaby with you.
The Savannah Bananas, Savannah’s new baseball team now heading into their second season, have continued the tradition of Bark in the Park — game nights you can take your furry family members to, or even adopt one while you’re there!
