Why a Vacation Rental Beats a Hotel for Holiday Family Travel

For most families, a vacation rental beats a hotel for holiday travel. You get a whole home instead of a row of hotel rooms, with a full kitchen for the big meal and a living room where everyone can actually be together. Over a long Thanksgiving or Christmas trip, that difference shows up every day.

Below are the questions we hear most from families planning a holiday trip to Savannah, answered by the local team that has been hosting guests in the Historic District since 2012.

Is a vacation rental cheaper than a hotel for a family holiday trip?

For groups, it usually is. A family of eight might need three or four hotel rooms, each priced separately with its own taxes and fees. A four-bedroom home puts that same group under one roof at one nightly rate, so the cost per guest often comes out lower.

The bigger savings show up at mealtime. A holiday trip means a lot of meals, and eating out three times a day as a family adds up fast. With a kitchen, you can make breakfast at the house, pack snacks for the day, and save restaurant reservations for the nights that matter.

When you compare, look at the total cost of the stay. Hotel parking, resort fees and extra rooms rarely show up in the nightly rate you see first.

Can you cook Thanksgiving dinner in a vacation rental?

Yes, and it's one of the best reasons to book one. Our homes come with kitchens stocked with cookware and dishes. For a full holiday meal, filter for homes with a full kitchen and a dining table that seats your whole group, then check the listing photos for oven space and counter room.

A few tips for cooking away from home:

  • Plan your grocery run for arrival day. Stores get crowded the day before Thanksgiving, so shop early if you can.
  • Bring any specialty tools you can't cook without, like a meat thermometer or a favorite roasting pan.
  • Not cooking this year? Local restaurants and bakeries take holiday orders for full dinners, sides and pies. Order early, because the best ones fill up.

How many bedrooms do you need for a family holiday trip?

A good rule is one bedroom per couple or adult, plus a shared room for kids. Here's a rough guide:

  • Up to 4 guests: 2 bedrooms
  • 6 to 8 guests: 3 to 4 bedrooms
  • 10 or more guests: 5+ bedrooms, or two homes close together

Separate bedrooms matter more on a holiday trip than a weekend getaway. When you're together for four or five days, early risers, night owls and nap schedules all need their own space. A real bedroom with a door that closes keeps everyone rested and in better spirits.

Is a vacation rental good for multigenerational travel?

It's where a vacation rental makes the biggest difference. Grandparents, parents and kids all stay under one roof, so nobody is texting from three floors away to coordinate dinner. Little ones can nap while the adults visit in the living room, and an early bedtime doesn't end the night for everyone else.

"A hotel gives you rooms. A home gives you a place to be together."

One honest note: many Historic District homes are historic townhomes with stairs. If someone in your group needs a ground-floor bedroom or fewer steps, call our team before you book and we'll point you to the right homes.

Can you bring your dog for the holidays?

Absolutely. A selection of our homes are pet-friendly, because the holidays don't feel complete without the whole family, four-legged members included. Savannah is a great city for dogs, with leafy squares for morning walks and plenty of patios that welcome pups. Leashed dogs are even welcome at the Savannah Christmas Market at Plant Riverside District.

Pet policies and fees vary by home, so check the listing or ask our team when you book. View Pet Friendly homes here.

What's it like to stay in Savannah's Historic District over the holidays?

You can walk almost everywhere. The squares are decorated for the season, River Street and the riverfront are a short stroll away, and the Savannah Christmas Market at Plant Riverside District runs from mid-November into the new year. The Savannah Boat Parade of Lights rolls down the river the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and December Nights & Holiday Lights at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens is a short drive away.

Staying in a home means you can head back to your own front door between outings. Drop off shopping bags, put your feet up by the tree, and go back out for dinner without a lobby, an elevator or a parking garage in between.

Who do you call if something goes wrong in a vacation rental?

This is the biggest question families ask when they're used to hotels, and it's a fair one. A hotel has a front desk. We have a local team based right downtown at 126 E. Liberty Street that knows every home we manage.

  • Keyless entry: No front desk line at check-in, just your code and your front door.
  • A digital guest guide for every home: Wi-Fi, appliances, parking and house details, all on your phone.
  • Real local help: Questions go to a Savannah team, not a call center. Reach us at (912) 257-4050.

When should you book a vacation rental for Thanksgiving or Christmas?

As early as you can, especially for larger groups. Homes with four or more bedrooms are the hardest to find and usually book first. Thanksgiving week and New Year's are the busiest stretches of the season.

Holiday dates may also carry minimum-night stays, so build your trip around the full holiday weekend rather than a single night.

The bottom line

If you're traveling with family this holiday season, a vacation rental gives you more space, a real kitchen and time together that a hotel can't match. In Savannah's Historic District, you also get the city's holiday lights, markets and squares right outside your door.
