The month of October plays host to a number of fun events and things to do. Not lost among them are three great food festivals taking place from River Street to Forsyth Park. A visit to Savannah in the month of October promises to be one of entertainment, amazing food, and memorable experiences.

Greek Food Festival

When: October 6 – 8, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Daily
Where: 14 West Anderson Street, just South of Forsyth Park

The Greek Food Festival last three days and features traditional Greek dancing and music, a market place, and of course, Greek Food! Hosted in St. Paul’s Hellenic Center, you can take a guided tour Thursday and Friday at 4, 6, and 8 p.m., and Saturday at 1, 3, and 5:30 p.m.

Make Sure You Try: The dolmades – grape leaves stuffed with herbs, rice and beef – and the spinach feta goodness that makes up spanakopita. Have a sweet tooth? The loukoumades are deep fried dough balls dipped in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and nuts, and are sure to hit the spot.

Insider Tip: Admission is free on Thursday and Friday before 4 p.m.

Oktoberfest

When:
October 7, 4-10 p.m.,
Oct. 8, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., and
Oct. 9, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Where: River Street

Savannah’s Oktoberfest has a little something for everyone: art, live music, German food - including a bratwurst tasting - and lots of beer! In addition to traditional German beers on tap, local breweries will showcase their fall craft line-up.

Oktoberfest tends to draw in tens of thousands of visitors. In fact, it’s second only to our St. Patrick’s Day celebration, but is more family friendly. The celebration will commence with the traditional tapping of the keg at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 7, and the night will wrap up with First Friday Fireworks at 9:30 p.m., sponsored by Wet Willies.

Savannah’s 33rd Annual Oktoberfest also means the return of one of the most anticipated events all year long: the Weiner Dog Races! A fan favorite, the only thing cuter than a gaggle of dachshunds racing against each other is the costume contest that follows!

Make Sure You Try: This fall’s craft brews from local favorites, Service Brewing and Moon River. Also, pretzels. Just trust us.

Insider Tip: The Weiner Dog races take place at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, but you’ll want to get there early if you want to be able to see!

Jewish Food Festival

When: October 30, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: Forsyth Park

The congregation of Mickve Israel, which dates back to 1733, will host their annual Shalom Y’All Food Festival in Forsyth Park on October 30. This one day event attracts about 10,000 attendees every year. Vendors, family and friends line the sidewalk in front of the fountain with freshly made, traditional food, including stuffed cabbage, deli sandwiches, homemade Challah, blintzes, and more!

Make Sure You Try: Potato Latkes and Homemade Blintzes!

Insider Tip: You’ll have to arrive early – early than they even open – if you want to try the homemade Challah bread.
