Things to Do

If you make your living as a tour guide in Savannah, January is considered a “poor month” - temperatures and tourism are down, and there’s little left to do but brave the frozen tundra of the Lowcountry for some shrimp and grits.

In reality, temperatures and tourism being down are two fantastic reasons why January is one of the best times of year to visit Savannah! Our Live Oak Trees keep their leaves year-round, so there’s always plenty of moss covered foliage adorning the squares. Savannah has a plethora of fantastic restaurants serving up delicious dishes all year, and in January the wait time is next to nothing. The city itself is a little bit quieter, a little bit slower, but just as welcoming as always.

In addition to all the great museums around Savannah, here are some of our top things to do in Savannah this January:

1. PULSE Art + Technology Festival

Art and innovation go hand-in-hand, which is why the Jepson Center is now celebrating 11 years of amazing technology-based art in Savannah! From January 11 - 15, immerse yourself in this interactive exhibit for free! Thanks to the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs and Connect Savannah, daytime admission to PULSE is free and open to the public. An exclusive access pass to evening lectures and performances can be reserved online for just $15.

2. Savannah Tire Hockey Classic

Now in it’s 18th year, the Savannah Tire Hockey Classic tournament features four of the South’s most exciting hockey programs: University of Georgia, University of Florida, Georgia Tech and Florida State University. Hosted by the Savannah Sports Council, the event takes place at the Savannah Civic Center. Ticket prices range from $12 - 18, with discounts available for military and students, and can be purchased by calling 912.651.6556.

The schedule is as follows:

Friday, January 13
Georgia Tech vs. Florida State at 6 p.m.
University of Georgia vs. University of Florida at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 14
University of Florida vs. Florida State at 5:30 p.m.
University of Georgia vs. Georgia Tech at 8:30 p.m.

3. Urban Adventure Quest

There is an app for everything, including scavenger hunts! Urban Adventure Quest combines the “excitement of the Amazing Race with a three-hour city tour” all from any smart phone! Roam around Savannah at your own pace, solving clues and completing challenges all while learning local history.

4. Savannah Taste Experience

One of my favorite things about Savannah is the food! You can find everything from Lowcountry classics with a twist at The Ordinary Pub, to French pastries from Cafe M. No matter what you’re in the mood for, Savannah has a restaurant sure to delight your palate. If you’re looking for a way to experience a wide range of Savannah flavor, a food tour is for you!

5. Murder Mystery Dinner Show

If you’ve read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, then you already know that Savannah is a city of mystery...and murder. All that’s missing is dinner! On The Spot Murder Mystery Dinner Show is a one of a kind experience every time. Driven by audience interaction, you’ll help choose the characters while enjoying a three course meal from Savannah Coffee Roasters. Tickets are $40 apiece, and showtimes are 6:30 p.m. every Friday night.
